Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their digestive system cannot utilize carbohydrates from plants or wheat. Dry food has to use some sort of filler, and while the most upscale expensive brands advertise using fruits, veggies, etc, this is useless to your cat. They can’t digest it. Also, the process that dry food goes through pretty much destroys/denatures all the vitamins, minerals, proteins, etc, which is why they have to add all of that back in.
Cats also do not experience thirst like us or even their canine companions. Yes, cats will drink water. But often in small amounts. So where do cats get their water from? Their food. They absorb the water content directly from what they eat. That is a cat’s main source of hydration. With kidney disease being a lead cause of feline death and constantly on the rise, and kidney function being directly related to fluid intake, it doesn’t take much to connect the dots.
Are Domestic Cats Different from their Ancestors?
Biology cannot be ignored, and cats were biologically designed to digest whole prey. No, our domestic cats are no different, and no we have not so evolved them that we have altered what they need. Dry food has actually only been around since the 40’s, humans are amazing but not that amazing. So why is dry food so prominent on the market? It’s in every store and touted as the best. For one simple reason. Convenience. You can also find potato chips everywhere and in almost every household. No one is claiming potato chips are good for you. We don’t even understand our own nutritional needs, so how a dry food company can claim to be making an optimum mix made from all kinds of artificial vitamins etc is best for you cat is ridiculous.
